My First Social Media Workshop!
This past Friday I attended Ohio Northern's Social Media Workshop hosted by PRSSA. It was a busy but insightful day filled with so many unique experiences and memories. The night before at our weekly PRSSA meeting I was able to get an inside look on how the entire day was going to run. I was also able to help get prepared for the event and get any last minute things done.
Friday morning I started my day off bright and early with an ethical leadership exam at 8 a.m. and right after that headed over to the Chapel to begin the workshop. We began with the keynote speaker Caroline Schumacher. She was the perfect person to get the day started because she was both inspiring and informative. Then, we headed over to Macintosh for the breakout sessions.
My first breakout session was with Amy Arnold and Kelly Savage. I enjoyed this session because they explained how organic and paid social media win together. They explained how they both work separately but are actually much stronger and more successful when they are put together. They also explained how it is important to always test the target audience, placement, budget, timing and ad creative. They both really emphasized how important it is to keep an open mind and the results are not always what you initially think.
Then, I went to my second breakout session where I listened to Tim Stried talk about his experience working for the OHSAA. It was really interesting to hear that they do not respond to any comments under their posts. As he explained why it made more sense and is definitely a smart decision.
During lunch I was able to sit with Shannon Caldwell. She is a graduate from ONU and was a Public Relations major and Social Media minor just like me. It was such a great experience being able to talk to her. During her time at ONU she was also the president of PRSSA which is something I would be interested in in the future so it was great to hear about that as well. After lunch I listened to two more speakers, Shannon Caldwell and Tyler Louth. Shannon discussed the PESO Model and how that looks into her career. Then Tyler spoke on AI within marketing and how it is going to change the culture and marketing industry. Both were very insightful and helped me get more knowledge on what the industry might look like in the future and also what to expect going into the workforce.
Overall, this was a great experience and was insightful in all parts of the business world. It was inspiring to hear from so many professionals on all their different experiences. I am excited to continue to be a member of PRSSA and grow each year!

Hey McKenna! It was so fun getting to spend time with you while preparing for the Social Media Workshop. Reading about your time at the workshop I realized we attended many of the same sessions. I enjoyed Amy and Kelly’s session, and was surprised when they compared the two advertisements at the end of the sessions and revealed which one performed better. I was also surprised when Tim shared that OHSAA does not respond to comments, but after the explanation it made sense. I also attended Tyler’s sessions and enjoyed the activity at the beginning where we compared AI generated responses.
