Wrapping up my First Greek Week

Image
My first Greek Week was a whirlwind to say the least. The entire week was full of events. I only participated in two events the entire week starting with Greek Sing at the beginning of the week and then at Greek Olympics on Saturday where I participated in dodgeball. The rest of the events during the week I was able to go and watch and cheer on my friends. It was fun to watch and get pictures of everything going on. Luckily I did not have a large amount of schoolwork to do so I could focus on creating content and getting posts out for the Panhel Instagram.  Saturday came around which was Greek Olympics. We had to be at the Alpha Xi house at 9:00am but I went at 8:15am to get my hair braided. It was an early morning but everyone was getting excited for the day to come. The only downside was that it began to rain and proceeded to rain the entire time. Fortunately it was not too cold but it was windy and rainy. That did not stop us from continuing the day full of events. Alpha Xi did...

"Essentials of Social Media Marketing" Textbook Summary

Image
As my social media class nears the end there are many things to reflect on. All semester we have worked through the "Essentials of Social Media Marketing textbook. Each class we would go through the slideshow that was given at the end of each chapter. I really liked how it gave these slides because it made it easier to comprehend the material rather than reading it in the textbook. I also went into the class slightly worried because I was not sure how the complicated and crazy world and concept of social media could exactly be taught. The book and Dr. Aggie did a great job of not only defining necessary topics but displaying how they can and should be applied. The book focuses on how to plan, execute and measure social media marketing and metrics.  There are numerous different core subjects the book goes over that we have learned throughout the entire semester and a few that have stuck with me throughout the semester. First, the foundations of social media marketing. This explains...

The Social Dilemma

Image
"The Social Dilemma" is an American docudrama that was released in 2020. The film was directed by Jeff Orlowski and written by Orlowski, Davis Coombe and Vickie Curtis. This docudrama that can be watched on Netflix talks about the negative social effects of social media. It uses the scene of a family of five who continue to get affected by the problems of social media use. Along with this they interview many social media experts who have worked in high-level positions for companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google.  My social media class is currently watching this movie together in class. We are about halfway through the film and so far it is very interesting. I have found it intriguing how these tech experts are being so upfront and honest with the audience about how social media can be unhealthy. They could easily be using their talents to continue to create new ways to keep society addicted to social media but instead they are telling the audience what is ac...

Greek Week 2026

Image
From the very first day of recruitment this past fall everyone I talked to involved in Greek Life mentioned Greek Week. The time has finally come and this entire week every day has an event that each chapter participates in. Then it all leads to the final day on Saturday which is Greek Olympics. On Monday it started off with Greek Sing. This is where each chapter performs a song and dance routine. The sororities go up against each other and the same for fraternities. I was nervous at first because it would be my first time ever performing at Greek Sing and also because our pledge class had our own section to perform and we had only realized the practice before some of the beats for our dance section were hard to hear. This means it would be very difficult to stay on our original timing. Luckily once we got out there we knew we just needed to do our best and have fun. I think it went well and everyone did their best. My favorite part was the ending when we all went in the center and did...

YouTube: Different Eras and Different Videos

Image
Every social media platform is constantly evolving right in front of our eyes on a daily basis. YouTube is in my opinion one of the biggest examples of that. From the beginning of the platform where the most popular kind of videos were simple unrehearsed vlogs to family vlogging and now where kids and babies are mostly targeted.  I was really into YouTube from about the age 9 to 14 years old. I loved watching family vlogs where they would do daily vlogs and random challenges. I also loved to watch content house videos when those became popular in 2019 and 2020. Specifically I watched a family channel called Its R Life. This was just an average family with 6 kids where they would sometimes do daily vlogs or numerous shopping challenges. I enjoyed watching their videos and would usually watch them daily. I still follow the mom on Instagram and I saw the other day that they stopped making videos. Many of their kids have grown up and she mentioned there really was not much of a point b...

Easter Weekend

Image
This past weekend was an amazing couple of days to spend at home for Easter. I was able to go home Wednesday night because both of my classes I typically have on Thursday were canceled. It was nice getting that extra full day on Thursday to make my weekend 4 days.  On Thursday I spent time finishing up any schoolwork that I wanted to get done before heading into the long weekend and some work to get me ahead for what is now this week. A new Barnes and Noble just opened by my house and it has the best cafe in there where I have been loving going to. It is a great spot where I can get out of the house to get work done (and as a reward look at all the books and other items afterwards). Later that day I went to my old dance gym to watch some of the team's practice. As I have mentioned in some of my previous blogs I love to stop up there as much as I can to see my old coaches, teammates and girls I used to coach. It was so nice to go up there to visit them and see the routines. Th...

The Power of LinkedIn

Image
LinkedIn is an extremely powerful and useful platform for all professionals in numerous industries. This is a space where you can connect with others and meet new professionals. It has more than 900 million users worldwide and is available in more than 200 countries and regions. More recently Microsoft bought the platform in 2016 for more than $26 billion. LinkedIn is not just for securing jobs. It is also to promote yourself and your personal brand. People can look at your profile to see your experience but also look deeper. If you promote yourself positively on the platform you never know who might see it and could be impressed with your skills, experience and overall impression.  I never paid much attention to LinkedIn in the past because I never really needed it in high school. But since coming to college it has become more popular and I have seen the importance of having it. In October when I went to ICON with the Public Relations Student Society of America we met so many peop...
