Facebook's Ongoing Privacy Concerns

Facebook is noted to be the most used social media platform in the world. Various generations use the app for numerous reasons. Some people use it multiple times a day or possibly only check it once a week. What is not debated about Facebook are the various privacy issues and concerns the public has encountered since the app was created.

Facebook has been facing privacy issues and controversy close to the beginning of the platform's existence. It began with the first scandal in 2007 when they were publishing users purchases from other sites to friends' Newsfeeds. This was done without the user's clear consent. This first scandal was followed by many other concerns and incidents throughout the years which could make users or potential users worried to keep using the app. In just the past twelve years Facebook has had numerous data breaches where hundreds of millions of users have been affected and personal information and data has been leaked.

Along with the privacy scandals Facebook has also run into ethical issues with users because their responses to these privacy scandals have not been the strongest. Noted from NBC News, in many responses to the multiple scandals Mark Zuckerberg (the creator of Facebook and CEO of Meta) had continuously kept apologizing to users and the public. But how many scandals can you have and apologize then vaguely say "we are working to be better"? It becomes difficult as a user to trust the company that their personal information is not being leaked to an unknown third party or even potentially being hacked.

I have a Facebook account but am only on it maybe two or three times a week for about five minutes. But I have seen many older family members who use it frequently have their accounts hacked and information leaked in the past. It can be a scary feeling not knowing what was leaked or where it was leaked to. I understand why Facebook is the most used platform on social media but also believe privacy issues will continue to be an issue. Although there are more advancements in ways to protect information hackers are also finding new ways to get into accounts. So even though it will probably be a reoccurring issue hopefully Facebook along with all platforms are able to get a better handle on it for the sake of users!

  1. I liked how you focused specifically on privacy instead of trying to cover every issue Facebook has faced. Your point about repeated apologies from Mark Zuckerberg and how that affects user trust was especially strong. I also appreciated your personal example about family members getting hacked because it made the issue feel more real.
