The Effects of Social Media Marketing: The Ups and Downs

 


Social media marketing is such a strong force that companies and brands can use to promote themselves and their message. But marketing through social media can also have its downsides. 

First, social media marketing can benefit companies in so many ways such as promoting products and campaigns, keeping consumers informed on promotions and deals, and to engage with the community and the brands customers. I personally believe that it is so important for a brand to promote themselves on social media because so much of the consumer population relies on the different forms and apps to get information on all their favorite things. Going of that, it is now possible to target the correct audience because the numerous platforms target by age, interests and behaviors so the brands will reach the specific people who might show interest in them.  It is also beneficial for brands because social media allows for two-way communication. So, the brand can engage with customers and followers which shows that the brand/company cares about their audience which just sets a better public image for them. 

Social media marketing can also be harmful to a brand if it's being done recklessly or without thought and strategy. First, everything on social media can be public and stay on the internet forever. So, if there is any negative feedback towards the brand then it has the chance to go public to a larger audience quickly. This could ultimately lead to a dent in a company's image or reputation. Also, if the company does not have a clear strategy or brand image then the messaging can look sloppy or unprofessional. This could make the band's message unclear and confusing to the audience which could lead to the customers losing interest.   

Overall, I love the idea of using social media marketing to promote a brand. I believe that if it is done correctly with a clear plan and strategy then it can be very effective to the public and social media users. But if there is no clear path or possible mistakes to harm the brand reputation then it can be difficult. Because it is always possible to encounter mistakes or things that could hurt the image through social media it is important to have a solid plan for recovering and a solid strategy throughout the brand.
